Walking with the Wise

5 min read
Proverbs 13:20

The people with whom we walk influence our character, so God calls us to surround ourselves with those who help us grow in wisdom.

Reflection

The Bible teaches us that our relationships have a profound impact on the direction of our lives. Proverbs presents a simple but powerful truth: those who walk with the wise will learn wisdom, while those who continually draw near to wrong paths may ultimately be affected by them. This does not mean we should distance ourselves from everyone who needs God, but that we must be aware of the influences we allow to shape our hearts. Every conversation, piece of advice, and example we receive can mold the way we think and act. Spiritual wisdom also involves recognizing which relationships draw us closer to God’s purpose and which may lead us away from His ways. Jesus spent time with all kinds of people, showing love and compassion, yet He always remained firm in His identity and mission. In the same way, God calls us to influence others without allowing harmful influences to transform our character. Walking with the wise means seeking people who love God, challenge us to grow, and help us live according to His will. A humble heart recognizes that it needs to learn from others and that God can use healthy relationships to shape our character.

Practical application

Examine the people who have the greatest influence in your life and ask God how you can strengthen relationships that draw you closer to Him.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You did not design us to walk alone and because You use people to teach and strengthen us. Give me wisdom to recognize the influences shaping my heart and humility to learn from those who seek to please You. Help me also become someone who builds up and encourages others in their walk with You. Free me from relationships that draw me away from Your purposes and form within me a character that reflects Christ in every relationship. May my friendships and connections become instruments through which I grow in wisdom and draw closer to You. Amen.

To reflect on

What people or influences are shaping the way I think, and are they drawing me closer to or farther from God?
