Leaving the Old Behind
New life in Christ calls us to leave behind our former way of living and walk in the new identity God has given us.
Reflection
New life in Christ involves a continual decision to abandon what belongs to our old nature. Paul uses the image of removing an old garment and putting on a new one to explain the process of spiritual transformation. Leaving the old behind does not mean denying our history or forgetting the experiences God used to form us, but recognizing that those things no longer have authority over our identity. Before Christ, our desires and decisions were affected by sin, but now we have received a new direction through the Holy Spirit. This process requires humility because God reveals areas that still need to be transformed. As we walk with Him, we learn to replace old thoughts, habits, and attitudes with what reflects the character of Christ.
Practical application
Identify something from your former way of living that you need to surrender to God today and ask Him for strength to walk in the new thing He is forming within you.
Prayer
Beloved Father, thank You because in Christ You gave me new life. Help me not cling to what belongs to my past or allow old habits to govern my present. Show me the areas that need transformation and give me strength to walk in obedience. May my life increasingly reflect the new identity I received by Your grace, and may Christ be formed within me. Amen.
