Discernment That Comes from God

Spiritual discernment enables us to recognize what pleases God and make decisions according to His truth.

Reflection

Life is filled with decisions for which we need more than human knowledge; we need spiritual discernment. The Bible shows that God desires to form within us the ability to recognize what is right, distinguish what builds us up, and understand His will in each situation. Paul prayed that believers would grow in knowledge and discernment, not merely to know more, but to approve what is excellent. This reveals that God’s wisdom has a practical purpose: to guide us toward a life that reflects Christ. Many times, we face options that appear good, but not everything good is necessarily best according to God’s purpose. Therefore, we need hearts sensitive to His direction. Jesus lived with perfect discernment because He always sought to do the Father’s will and refused to be guided by appearances or outside pressure. Spiritual discernment develops through God’s Word, prayer, and a continual relationship with Him. As we grow spiritually, we learn to evaluate our decisions from God’s perspective and not only from our emotions or personal convenience.

Practical application

Before making an important decision, seek God’s direction in prayer and ask which option best reflects His will.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You have not left me to walk without direction. I recognize that many times I make decisions based only on what I see or feel in the moment. Give me spiritual discernment to understand Your ways and choose what pleases You. Help me develop a heart sensitive to Your voice and willing to obey Your truth. May my mind be guided by Your wisdom, and may my decisions reflect the character of Christ. Teach me always to seek what is best according to Your purpose and not merely what is easiest or most convenient for me. Amen.
