The Gift of Exhortation

5 min read
Romans 12:8

The gift of exhortation is an ability given by God to encourage, strengthen, and motivate others to grow in faith and walk according to His will.

Reflection

The gift of exhortation is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit that enables a person to offer encouragement, counsel, and spiritual direction to other believers. The Bible shows that exhortation is intended to strengthen the church, help people remain firm, and motivate them to live according to God’s truth. This gift is not merely about pointing out mistakes, but walking beside others with love, grace, and wisdom so they can grow spiritually. A person with this gift seeks to lift up the weak, encourage the discouraged, and remind people of God’s promises in difficult moments. Exhortation should be guided by love and humility, following Christ’s example, who always called people to draw closer to God.

Practical application

Reflect today on how your words impact others and consider how you can use them to encourage, strengthen, and draw people closer to God.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You continually encourage and strengthen us through Your love and Word. Help me become a person who brings encouragement and hope to those around me. If You have placed within me the ability to exhort, teach me to do so with love, wisdom, and humility. Remove every form of destructive criticism from me and allow my words to build up, restore, and strengthen the faith of others. May my life become an instrument that reflects Your grace and care. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I using my words to build up and encourage others, or am I allowing them to become a source of criticism and discouragement?
