The Spirit Produces Self-Control

5 min read
Galatians 5:22-23

The Holy Spirit produces self-control within us so we can overcome disordered desires and live according to God’s will.

Reflection

The battle against lust cannot be won through human willpower alone. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit produces fruit in the believer’s life, and one of those qualities is self-control. This quality enables us to govern our desires and decisions instead of being ruled by them. God not only calls us to reject what is wrong, but also enables us to live differently through His Spirit. Self-control does not mean denying that temptation exists, but learning to respond to it under God’s direction. As we walk with the Holy Spirit, our character is transformed, and our desires begin to align with the Lord’s will. True freedom is not doing everything we feel, but having the ability to choose what honors God.

Practical application

Reflect today on the areas in which you need the Holy Spirit to produce greater self-control in your life.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You have not left me alone in my struggles, but have given me Your Holy Spirit to guide and transform me. Help me depend on Your power and not only on my own strength. Produce self-control, purity, and wisdom within me so I can make decisions that honor You. Forgive me for the times I have allowed my desires to govern my life. Form the character of Christ within me and help me walk under the direction of Your Spirit. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I depending on the Holy Spirit to overcome my struggles, or am I trying to face everything only through my own strength?
