Pride Draws Us Away from God

5 min read
James 4:10

Pride keeps us from recognizing our need for God, while humility opens our hearts to receive His grace and direction.

Reflection

Pride is one of the attitudes that most deeply affects our relationship with God because it leads us to depend on ourselves instead of recognizing our need for the Lord. The Bible teaches that God gives grace to the humble and calls His children to draw near with surrendered hearts. Pride may appear in many ways: believing we are always right, rejecting correction, seeking personal recognition, or thinking our abilities are sufficient without God. Yet true spiritual strength begins when we acknowledge that everything we are and have comes from Him. Humility does not mean thinking less of ourselves, but understanding our proper position before God. When we place our pride in His hands, we allow Him to transform our character, teach us, and draw us closer to His purpose.

Practical application

Reflect today on the areas where pride may be occupying a place that belongs only to God and ask Him to form a humble heart within you.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because Your love allows me to draw near even when I recognize my weaknesses. Help me identify the areas where pride has influenced my thoughts, decisions, or relationships. Teach me to walk humbly, receive Your correction, and depend completely on Your grace. Forgive me for the times I have trusted more in myself than in You. Form the character of Christ within me and allow my life to reflect a heart willing to serve and obey You. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I allowing pride to govern my heart, or am I living with humility and dependence on God?
