Boasting Only in the Cross

5 min read
Galatians 6:14

The cross reminds us that our hope is not in our merit, but in the perfect work Christ accomplished for us.

Reflection

Human beings naturally look for reasons to feel proud: achievements, abilities, position, or recognition. Even in the spiritual life, we can fall into the temptation of thinking that our relationship with God depends on what we do for Him. But Paul understood a different truth: everything that could be considered personal gain lost its importance before the greatness of Christ and His work on the cross. Boasting in the cross means recognizing that our salvation, identity, and hope depend completely on Jesus. The cross destroys pride because it reminds us that we were not rescued by our perfection, but by God’s grace. At the same time, it fills us with gratitude because it shows how far Christ’s love went for us. When the cross occupies the center of our lives, we stop seeking our own glory and begin living to exalt the One who saved us.

Practical application

Reflect today on something in which you have placed personal confidence and surrender it again to Christ.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because my hope is not based on my achievements, but on the perfect work of Jesus Christ on the cross. Forgive me for the times I seek personal recognition or try to depend on my own strength. Help me remember that everything I am and everything I have comes from Your grace. May my life not seek my own glory, but always point to Christ and the love He showed for me. Amen.

To reflect on

Is my life centered on my own achievements, or on the work of Christ that gave me salvation?
