Wisdom Knows When to Speak

5 min read
Proverbs 15:23

God’s wisdom teaches us that what we say matters, but so do the timing, manner, and intention with which we use our words.

Reflection

Words have profound power in our relationships and can produce life or cause wounds that are difficult to heal. Therefore, the Bible teaches that wisdom does not consist only of knowing what to say, but also of recognizing the right time to say it. Proverbs reminds us that a word given at the right time can bring joy and benefit, showing that wise communication requires discernment. Many times, we speak from emotion, the need to respond quickly, or the desire to defend our position, without considering the impact our words may have. Jesus, however, showed perfect wisdom in speech: He knew when to teach, when to correct, and when to remain silent. His example reveals that true spiritual maturity includes learning to control both our words and our timing. The wisdom that comes from God helps us listen before responding, seek to build others up, and communicate truth in love. When we allow God to transform our hearts, He also transforms the way we express ourselves. Our conversations begin to reflect patience, grace, and understanding, becoming instruments that strengthen our relationships and glorify Him.

Practical application

Before responding in an important conversation today, pause and ask God for wisdom about what to say and when to say it.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You are a God who speaks with wisdom and love. Help me learn from You and use my words in a way that reflects Your character. Forgive me for the times I have spoken impulsively without considering how my words may affect others. Give me self-control to know when to speak, when to listen, and how to respond with grace. May my conversations bring encouragement, peace, and edification to those around me. Form the wisdom of Christ within me so I can communicate with love and truth. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I speaking only to express what I think, or am I learning to use my words with God’s wisdom and love?
