Firstborn over All Creation
Christ has supreme authority over all creation because everything exists through Him and for Him.
Reflection
The expression “firstborn over all creation” has sometimes been misunderstood as though it meant Jesus was the first created being. However, the biblical context reveals a much greater truth: it speaks of position, authority, and supremacy. In biblical culture, the firstborn held the place of highest honor and inheritance. Paul is declaring that Christ has first place over all creation because He is the Lord through whom all things were made and in whom all things find their purpose. Before the universe existed, Christ already was. He does not belong to creation; He is above it and has authority over everything created. This truth changes our perspective because it means our faith is placed in the One who sustains the entire universe. The same Christ who rules over all things also knows our hearts and draws near to us in love.
Practical application
Read Colossians 1:15-20 and meditate on the greatness and supremacy of Christ over all creation.
Prayer
Beloved Father, thank You because Jesus Christ is above all things and because my life is in the hands of the Lord of all creation. Help me not reduce the greatness of Christ to only what He does for me, but to contemplate who He is. May recognizing His supremacy increase my worship, trust, and desire to live under His lordship. Amen.
