Test All Things; Hold Fast What Is Good

5 min read
1 Thessalonians 5:21

Spiritual discernment teaches us to evaluate everything according to God’s truth and retain what strengthens our faith.

Reflection

Life is filled with messages, opinions, and ideas that seek to influence the way we think. Therefore, the Bible calls us to develop discernment and not accept everything without evaluation. Paul encouraged believers to test all things and hold fast what is good, showing that Christian faith does not consist of superficial acceptance, but of a deliberate pursuit of truth. This does not mean living suspicious of everything, but learning to examine each matter in the light of God’s Word. Many times, we can be influenced by ideas that seem right because they agree with our desires or emotions, but they do not always reflect the Lord’s will. Jesus displayed perfect wisdom by responding with God’s truth and refusing to be carried away by the opinions of those around Him. Spiritual discernment requires humility because it recognizes that we need God’s direction to evaluate things correctly. As we know His Word more deeply, we develop greater ability to distinguish between what builds us up and what may draw us away from His purpose. Mature faith is not afraid to examine because it trusts that God’s truth remains firm.

Practical application

Analyze one influence that is shaping the way you think and compare it with the principles of God’s Word.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You have given us Your truth to guide us amid so many voices and influences. Help me develop a wise heart that can examine everything according to Your principles. Free me from accepting ideas only because they seem attractive or because many people follow them. Give me humility to learn, discernment to evaluate, and wisdom to retain what comes from You. May my mind be shaped by Your Word, and may my decisions reflect mature and steadfast faith in Christ. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I evaluating what I hear and accept according to God’s truth, or am I being guided mainly by the opinions of the world?
