His Righteousness for Our Guilt

On the cross, a marvelous exchange took place: Christ took our guilt and gave us His righteousness so we could be reconciled to God.

Reflection

The gospel reveals an exchange that completely surpasses human understanding. Jesus, who never committed sin, took our sinful condition upon Himself and received the judgment we deserved. At the same time, those of us who believe in Him received something we could never obtain through our own efforts: the righteousness of Christ before God. This does not mean God ignores our sin, but that Christ has completely paid the price. Many people live trying to prove they are good enough to draw near to God, but the cross reminds us that our acceptance before the Father depends on the perfect work of Jesus. The righteousness we receive in Christ is not a reward for our performance, but a gift of grace. This truth frees us from pride and guilt because it teaches us that our security rests completely in what Christ did for us.

Practical application

Reflect today on the fact that your relationship with God is based on Christ’s righteousness and not on your own merit.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because in Christ I received a righteousness I could never attain on my own. Thank You because Jesus took my place and allowed me to draw near to You with confidence. Help me leave behind the pride of believing I can save myself through my own works and also the guilt of thinking my mistakes are greater than Your grace. May I rest each day in the perfect work of Christ and live gratefully for Your love. Amen.
