Taking Up the Cross Each Day

Following Jesus involves a daily surrender in which we stop living centered on ourselves and begin living under His will.

Reflection

The cross not only represents the sacrifice Christ made for us; it also represents the call Jesus gives to those who desire to follow Him. When He spoke of taking up the cross each day, Jesus was showing that discipleship requires a continual decision to surrender our lives to God. In a culture that constantly invites us to pursue comfort, personal success, and immediate satisfaction, Christ calls us to a different path: one of surrender, obedience, and love. Taking up the cross does not mean seeking unnecessary suffering, but being willing to place God’s will above our own desires. The disciples learned that following Jesus meant leaving behind securities and allowing Him to transform their priorities. In the same way, each day we have the opportunity to choose again to live for Christ and allow Him to govern our hearts.

Practical application

Identify something you need to surrender to Christ and give it to Him today as an expression of love and obedience.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You because You took up the cross out of love for me. Help me now respond to that love with a life surrendered to You. Remove selfishness, comfort, and everything that occupies the place only You deserve from my heart. Teach me to follow You faithfully each day, even when it requires giving up my own desires. May my life reflect that You are my Lord and my greatest treasure. Amen.
