A Character Approved by God

5 min read
1 Samuel 16:7

Character that pleases God is not based on outward appearance, but on a transformed heart that remains faithful before Him.

Reflection

The world often evaluates people by what others can see: achievements, position, appearance, or recognition. Yet the Bible reveals that God looks at something deeper: the heart. When Samuel was sent to anoint Israel’s next king, he learned that God does not choose according to human standards, but according to what is within a person. This truth reminds us that character has greater value than the image we try to project. We may impress others with our abilities or words, but God knows our motives, thoughts, and private decisions. A character approved by God does not mean a perfect life, but a heart willing to be formed, corrected, and guided by Him. David made mistakes, but was known as a man after God’s own heart because he maintained an attitude of repentance and dependence on the Lord. God works within us to produce faithfulness, humility, and genuine obedience. True transformation occurs when we stop living to please people and begin living sincerely before God.

Practical application

Examine one motive of your heart today and ask God which area needs to be transformed in order to please Him more.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You completely know my heart and still love me and desire to transform me. Help me not focus only on what others can see, but on developing character that is pleasing before You. Reveal the areas in which I need to grow, correct my motives, and form within me a sincere, humble, and obedient heart. May my life seek not merely human recognition, but the approval that comes from You. Make me more like Christ each day in the way I think and act. Amen.

To reflect on

Am I more concerned about the image I show others, or about the character God is forming within my heart?
