Seek God’s Counsel Before Deciding

God's Guidance · 5 min read

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all {men} liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5

Introduction

God does not expect us to face our decisions alone; He invites us to seek His wisdom and direction.

Reflection

Every day, we make decisions that can influence our future, our relationships, and our spiritual growth. Some seem small, while others can completely change the course of our lives. Many times, we first look for answers in our experience, in the opinions of others, or in what seems most convenient, but God invites us to come to Him first. Seeking God’s counsel does not mean ignoring the wisdom of other people, but recognizing that He must be our primary source of direction. Prayer allows us to pause, listen, and remember that we do not have to depend only on our own abilities. Solomon asked God for wisdom because he understood that ruling well required something greater than his own knowledge. When we seek the Lord before deciding, we demonstrate trust in His authority and acknowledge that His plans are better than ours.

Practical application

Take time today to present a pending decision before God and ask Him for wisdom before you act.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have made decisions without first seeking Your direction. Teach me to pause and ask You before moving forward. Give me wisdom to recognize what is right, humility to accept Your counsel, and patience to wait for Your timing. May my decisions reflect trust in You and not merely my own desires. Guide every step of my life according to Your perfect will. Amen.

For reflection
Do I seek God’s counsel before making important decisions, or do I only come to Him after I have already chosen?
