The Christian life includes an inward struggle between the desires of the flesh and the direction of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible acknowledges that those who belong to Christ experience an inward battle. Paul explains that the flesh and the Spirit have opposing desires, showing that Christian transformation is a process in which we learn to live under God’s direction. The flesh represents human nature inclined toward sin, while the Holy Spirit produces new desires within us that please the Lord. This struggle does not mean God has abandoned us, but reveals our continual need to depend on Him. Many times, we may feel tension between what we know we should do and what our impulses desire. The answer is not to trust only in our willpower, but to walk under the guidance of the Spirit. As we draw near to God, His power transforms our character and helps us overcome what draws us away from His purpose.
Reflect today on what is governing your decisions: the desires of the flesh or the direction of the Holy Spirit.
Beloved Father, thank You because You have not left me alone in the spiritual struggle, but have given me Your Spirit to guide and transform me. Help me recognize my weaknesses and depend more on Your power. Forgive me for the times I have followed my own desires instead of Your will. Strengthen my spirit and teach me to walk each day under Your direction. May my life reflect the character of Christ. Amen.
