Citizens of Heaven

Heavenly inheritance · 5 min read

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: {conversation...: or, we live or conduct ourselves as citizens of heaven, or, for obtaining heaven}
Philippians 3:20

Introduction

Believers have an eternal identity as citizens of heaven, which transforms the way they live in this world.

Reflection

The Bible teaches that those who belong to Christ have a citizenship different from that of this world. Paul reminds believers that their true citizenship is in heaven, showing that our primary identity is not determined by nationality, position, or earthly circumstances, but by our relationship with God. This truth does not mean we should withdraw from our responsibilities on earth, but that we should live remembering that we represent a higher kingdom. A citizen of heaven seeks to reflect the values of their eternal homeland while living in this world. Jesus taught His followers to seek first the kingdom of God and live according to its principles. When our identity is founded on Christ, our priorities change, and we stop living only for what is temporary. The hope of Jesus’ return encourages us to remain firm and live with purpose, knowing that our final story is in God’s hands.

Practical application

Reflect today on your true identity and ask whether your decisions reveal that you belong to God’s kingdom.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because in Christ You have given me an eternal citizenship and a hope that remains. Help me remember that my primary identity is in You and not in the circumstances of this world. Teach me to live as a representative of Your Kingdom, reflecting Your values through my words and actions. Forgive me for the times I have focused only on what is temporary. May my life display the hope and transformation of someone who belongs to heaven. Amen.

For reflection
Am I living aware that my true citizenship is in heaven, or am I allowing temporary things to define my identity?
