Reading the Bible with Humility

Reading · 5 min read

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
James 1:21

Introduction

God desires us to approach His Word with a humble heart, willing to listen, learn, and be transformed.

Reflection

The way we approach the Bible influences how we receive its message. We can read it merely to confirm our own ideas, or we can approach it humbly, recognizing that God has something to teach us. James encourages us to receive the Word with meekness because it has power to transform our lives. Reading with humility means being willing to be corrected, learn new ways, and allow God to reveal the areas where we need to grow. The Bible was not given merely to increase our knowledge, but to form our character and draw us closer to the Lord. When we open our hearts to its teachings, we allow God to work deeply within us.

Practical application

Reflect today on the attitude with which you approach God’s Word and ask Him for a heart willing to learn.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because Your Word has power to transform my life. Help me approach Scripture with humility and not with pride or preconceived ideas. Give me a teachable heart, willing to receive Your correction and follow Your direction. Each time I read Your Word, may I hear Your voice, grow in wisdom, and allow You to shape my character according to Your will. Amen.

For reflection
Do I approach the Bible with a heart willing to be taught by God, or do I only seek to confirm what I already think?
