The Reality of Human Nature

Human nature · 5 min read

For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but {how} to perform that which is good I find not.
Romans 7:18

Introduction

Recognizing our human nature helps us understand our need for God and depend on His grace to experience true transformation.

Reflection

The Bible presents a profound reality about the human condition: although we often desire to do what is right, our own strength is not enough to live fully according to God’s purpose. Paul expressed this inner struggle by recognizing the difference between what he wanted to do and what he was actually able to accomplish. This teaching is not meant to discourage us, but to show us the importance of depending completely on the Lord. When we acknowledge our limitations, we stop trusting only in our own abilities and understand that we need God’s transforming work in our hearts. The Christian life is not merely an attempt to improve our behavior, but an invitation to allow Christ to transform our minds, desires, and decisions. God’s grace meets us in our weakness and enables us to walk in a new direction. Recognizing our need for the Lord is the first step toward experiencing a life guided by His power and not by our own strength.

Practical application

Reflect today on the areas where you have tried to depend only on yourself and allow God to teach you to trust more fully in His grace and transforming power.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You know my weaknesses and still love me deeply. Thank You because I do not depend only on my own strength, but on Your grace that sustains and transforms me. Help me recognize my need for You each day and surrender before You the areas where I still need to grow. Renew my mind, strengthen my heart, and teach me to walk under the direction of Your Holy Spirit. May my life reflect Christ’s character more each day, and may I rest in the assurance that Your work within me continues to advance. Amen.

For reflection
Am I recognizing my need for God, or am I trying to live by depending only on my own abilities?
