Pride Seeks Recognition

Pride · 5 min read

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. {alms: or, righteousness} {of your: or, with your}
Matthew 6:1

Introduction

Pride seeks people’s approval, but God calls us to live to please Him with sincere and humble hearts.

Reflection

The desire to be recognized can become a trap for our hearts when we begin doing things to receive admiration from others instead of God’s approval. Jesus taught that even our good deeds can lose their true purpose when they are motivated by the desire to be seen. Spiritual pride seeks recognition, applause, and human acceptance, but humility serves even when no one notices because it finds satisfaction in pleasing the Lord. God sees the intentions of the heart and values a life born from genuine love for Him. When we stop constantly seeking the approval of others, we find freedom to serve joyfully and live according to God’s purpose. Our identity does not depend on the recognition we receive, but on the love we have received from the Father.

Practical application

Reflect today on your motives and ask God whether you are seeking to please Him or only to receive the approval of others.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because my value does not depend on people’s opinions, but on the love I have in You. Help me examine my motives and leave behind every desire for recognition that could occupy the place that belongs only to You. Teach me to serve humbly, do good even when no one sees, and seek only to please You. Form within me a sincere heart that reflects the character of Christ and finds its satisfaction in Your presence. Amen.

For reflection
Am I doing things to receive recognition from others, or to truly honor God?
