The Father and the Humility to Ask for Help

Father · 5 min read

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all {men} liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5

Introduction

A humble father recognizes his limits and seeks help from God and others in order to better fulfill his family responsibilities.

Reflection

A father’s responsibilities can bring moments of weariness, uncertainty, and challenges in which it seems he should have every answer. Yet God does not call fathers to depend only on their own strength, but to recognize their need for Him. The humility to ask for help is not a sign of weakness, but an expression of wisdom and maturity. The Bible teaches that God gives wisdom to those who seek it and also reminds us of the importance of counsel and support from other believers. A father who recognizes his limitations teaches his children that everyone needs to grow and depend on the Lord. Asking for help, seeking counsel, and receiving correction can help him become a better husband, father, and leader within the home.

Practical application

Reflect today on the areas where you need support or direction and consider whether you are allowing God and others to help you grow.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because I do not have to face alone the responsibilities You have entrusted to me. Help me have a humble heart that recognizes my limits and seeks Your direction at all times. Teach me to ask for help when I need it, receive counsel wisely, and continue growing as a father. Remove the pride that keeps me from acknowledging my weaknesses and allow my family to see in me an example of humility and dependence on You. Amen.

For reflection
Am I trying to carry all my responsibilities alone, or do I have the humility to seek help and direction when I need it?
