The Parable of the Ten Virgins

Parables of Jesus · 5 min read

Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
Matthew 25:13

Introduction

The parable of the ten virgins teaches us the importance of being spiritually prepared and remaining watchful as we await Christ’s return.

Reflection

In this parable, Jesus spoke of ten virgins waiting for the bridegroom’s arrival. Five brought extra oil for their lamps, while the other five were not properly prepared. When the bridegroom arrived, only those who were ready were able to enter the celebration. This teaching reminds us that genuine faith requires perseverance, preparation, and a consistent relationship with God. We cannot live a spiritual life based only on occasional moments, but must remain firm and watchful in the hope of Christ’s return. The parable invites us to examine our hearts and ask whether we are living prepared to meet the Lord.

Practical application

Reflect today on your spiritual preparation and consider whether you are cultivating a consistent relationship with God while you wait for His promises.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because You have given us the hope of Christ’s return and the promise of Your eternal Kingdom. Help me live prepared, with a steadfast heart and a consistent faith. Do not allow me to be distracted by the temporary things of this world, but help me keep my eyes fixed on You. Strengthen my relationship with You and help me remain watchful, obedient, and filled with hope until the day You fulfill Your promises. Amen.

For reflection
Am I living spiritually prepared to meet Christ, or am I allowing distractions to draw me away from my relationship with God?
