The Great Commission Is a Command

The Great Commission · 5 min read

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: {teach...: or, make disciples, or, Christians of all nations} Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, {even} unto the end of the world. Amen.
Matthew 28:19-20

Introduction

The Great Commission is Christ’s call for His followers to proclaim the gospel and make disciples among all nations.

Reflection

Before ascending to heaven, Jesus left His disciples a clear and permanent mission: to make disciples of all nations. The Great Commission was not a suggestion or an optional activity for a few believers, but a command given to the whole church. Christ, who has all authority in heaven and on earth, sent His followers to share the message of the gospel and teach others to obey His words. This mission is born from God’s love for people and His desire for everyone to know the salvation found in Jesus. Many times, we may think evangelism belongs only to pastors or missionaries, but Jesus called every believer to participate in this work. Fulfilling the Great Commission begins in our daily lives: through our testimony, conversations, service, and willingness to show the love of Christ. The church exists to worship God, grow in faith, and also carry His message to the world. When we understand this calling, we stop viewing mission as an outside responsibility and begin seeing it as part of God’s purpose for our lives.

Practical application

Reflect today on how you can participate in the mission of sharing Christ with the people God has placed near you.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You because You allowed me to know the message of salvation and become part of Your mission in this world. Help me take seriously the calling You have given us to make disciples. Remove my fears and give me love, wisdom, and courage to share Your truth with others. May my life reflect the gospel, and may my words and actions draw people toward You. Teach me to live with a greater purpose, remembering that I was called to participate in Your work. Amen.

For reflection
Am I living as someone sent by Christ to fulfill His mission, or am I leaving this responsibility only to others?
