Taking Every Thought Captive

Lust · 5 min read

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; {imaginations: or, reasonings}
2 Corinthians 10:5

Introduction

Spiritual purity requires learning to direct our thoughts toward Christ and reject what draws us away from God’s will.

Reflection

The battle against lust often begins in the mind. Paul teaches that we must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, showing that we are not called to passively accept everything that enters our minds. Thoughts influence our desires, decisions, and actions, so it is important to learn to examine them in the light of God’s truth. This does not mean we will never experience wrong thoughts, but that we must decide which thoughts we allow to remain and govern our hearts. Spiritual transformation includes renewing the way we think and submitting our minds to Christ’s lordship. The Holy Spirit helps us identify what does not please God and strengthens us to replace it with thoughts that produce life and purity.

Practical application

Examine your thoughts today and surrender to Christ the areas of your mind that need transformation.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because Christ also has authority over my mind and thoughts. Help me not be enslaved by wrong desires or thoughts that draw me away from You. Teach me to examine what passes through my mind and bring it under Your truth. Renew my thoughts, strengthen my self-control, and allow my inner life to reflect the character of Christ. Amen.

For reflection
Am I allowing my thoughts to be guided by Christ, or am I letting wrong desires govern my mind?
