Life in Christ requires leaving behind what belongs to the former nature and allowing God to transform our priorities, desires, and actions according to His will.
The Bible uses the expression “put to death what is earthly” to describe a conscious decision to abandon the things that draw us away from God’s purpose. Paul is not speaking only about outward changes, but about deep transformation of the heart that affects the way we think and live. Following Christ means recognizing that certain attitudes, desires, and habits can no longer occupy the same place in our lives because we now belong to Him. This process requires dependence on the Holy Spirit because true transformation is not born only from human effort, but from the work God accomplishes within us. When we surrender our weak areas to the Lord, He begins forming new character within us and helps us live according to the values of His Kingdom. Putting to death what is earthly does not mean losing our identity, but allowing Christ to transform what does not reflect His character so our lives may display His love and purpose more clearly.
Reflect today on the areas of your life that need to be surrendered to God so He may continue forming a new way of living within you.
Beloved Father, thank You because in Christ You have given me a new life and because You desire to transform my heart each day. Help me recognize what still needs to be surrendered before You. Give me humility to accept Your direction, strength to make right decisions, and dependence on Your Holy Spirit to live according to Your will. Remove from me everything that does not reflect Your character and form within me a life that honors Your name. May my thoughts, words, and actions become increasingly like Christ. Amen.
