The Parable of the Lamp

Parables of Jesus · 5 min read

And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? {bushel: the word in the original signifieth a less measure}
Mark 4:21

Introduction

The parable of the lamp teaches us that God’s truth should be received and reflected so it can illuminate the lives of others.

Reflection

In this parable, Jesus spoke of a lamp that is not placed under a container, but in a place where it can give light. Through this teaching, Jesus showed that God’s light should not remain hidden, but should be displayed in the lives of those who follow Him. God’s Word transforms our inner lives and calls us to reflect His truth through our actions, words, and decisions. Faith was not designed to remain hidden, but to become a testimony that brings hope to those around us. When we allow Christ to illuminate our lives, we can become instruments that display His love and truth in a world that needs direction.

Practical application

Reflect today on the light God has placed in your life and consider whether you are allowing others to see Christ through you.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because Your Word illuminates my path and transforms my heart. Help me not hide the work You are doing within me, but reflect Your love and truth to those around me. Remove every fear that keeps me from becoming a testimony of Christ. May my words, actions, and decisions display Your light and bring hope to others. May my life glorify You at all times. Amen.

For reflection
Am I reflecting Christ’s light to others, or am I keeping hidden the work God is doing in my life?
