The Parable of the Good Shepherd

Parables of Jesus · 5 min read

I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
John 10:11

Introduction

The parable of the Good Shepherd reveals Christ’s love, for He cares for, guides, and gives His life for His sheep.

Reflection

In this teaching, Jesus presents Himself as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep, guides them, and is willing to give His life for them. Unlike a shepherd who abandons the flock when danger comes, Christ remains faithful and protects those who belong to Him. This parable shows the close relationship God desires to have with us: one founded on love, trust, and care. Jesus knows our needs, hears our voice, and leads us along the right path. It also reminds us that our security does not depend on our own strength, but on the constant care of the perfect Shepherd. As His followers, we are called to hear His voice and remain close to Him.

Practical application

Reflect today on how you are following Christ’s voice and consider whether you are trusting His care as your Good Shepherd.

Prayer

Beloved Father, thank You because in Christ I have a Shepherd who knows me, loves me, and cares for me. Help me hear Your voice and follow Your ways even when I do not fully understand the path. Remove fear from my heart and teach me to rest in Your protection and faithfulness. Allow my life to remain close to Jesus and reflect His love and care toward others. Amen.

For reflection
Am I hearing Christ’s voice and trusting His care, or am I trying to direct my life through my own strength?
