Union with Christ Produces Fruit

Union with Christ · 5 min read

I am the vine, ye {are} the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. {without me: or, severed from me}
John 15:5

Introduction

Spiritual fruit is not produced through isolated human effort, but as the result of a life continually connected to Christ.

Reflection

One of the evidences of a life transformed by God is the fruit that begins to appear in our character. However, Jesus made it clear that this fruit does not come simply from trying to behave better, but from remaining united to Him. Just as a branch cannot produce fruit if it is separated from the tree, we cannot reflect the character of Christ apart from His presence. Many times, we try to change only our outward actions, but God works from within. He transforms our motivations, thoughts, and desires to produce something new in us. Love, patience, kindness, and self-control are the result of a life in which Christ has room to work. This process requires time and dependence because God is forming within us a character that reflects Jesus. Remaining united to Christ means allowing His life to flow through us until others can see evidence of His work.

Practical application

Examine your life and ask God to produce in you a spiritual fruit that more clearly reflects the character of Christ.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I recognize that many times I try to change through my own strength what only You can transform. Help me remain united to You and depend on Your work in my heart. Produce in me a character that reflects Your love, patience, and kindness. May my life not only speak about You with words, but show Your presence through the fruit You produce in me. Amen.

For reflection
Am I trying to change from the outside in, or am I allowing Christ to transform my heart first?
